I Bought 30 Wigs in 60 Days: Here’s What I Learned

30 wigs in 60 days illustration

Having previously worked on a wig website in my SEO consultancy role, I knew wigs weren’t cheap. And with my PCOS related androgenetic alopecia speeding up, I knew it was only a matter of time before I’d need one. I started setting money aside with the expectation that a £1,000 budget would cover two, maybe three, good wigs. Enough to rotate them for cleaning and keep me going.

The problem? I felt completely overwhelmed. There were so many cap styles, fits, and hair types that I didn’t even know where to start.

Then, like a beacon of light, my TikTok algorithm saved me.

Creators were sharing wig tips, styling tricks, and cap construction insights. I was seeing these gorgeous styles in real life, not just on mannequins or in stock photos, and they looked amazing. And then came the game-changer: I discovered wig shops on TikTok selling styles that were way more affordable than the brands I’d seen before.

That’s when it hit me. Maybe this didn’t have to be about buying the “one or two sensible wigs” I thought I needed.
Maybe this could be about transformation. About experimenting with styles, colours, and lengths I’d never had access to before.

My mindset flipped from nervous apprehension to playful excitement.
Maybe I could be blonde. Maybe I could have curls. Maybe I could try something I’d never dare with my bio hair.

So I took my original budget and instead of buying a couple of “safe” wigs, I bought as many different styles, lengths, and colours as I could. Not just to find what suited me, but to find myself again.

The affordability and quality of these wigs gave me the confidence to experiment. It’s helped me rebuild a confidence that had been fading for years, and find new joy in everyday life.

And now? The purpose of this site is to share that journey with you, and encourage you to start your own confidence-building adventure. Check out my TikTok account where I share my journey.

Here are 10 things I learned in my first 60 days of wig buying:

1. You don’t know your style until you try it

That “safe” style you swore you’d stick to? Might end up being meh. And the one you thought you’d never pull off? Could be your new signature.

2. Cap style matters more than you think

I discovered that certain cap styles fitted my petite head better, something I may not have discovered if I’d been limited to a couple of wigs. I’d recommend trying a selection of lace-front, hard cap and monofilament if you can.

3. Natural lighting is the truth-teller

That perfect shade indoors might turn brassy or dull outside. Always check colour in daylight before you commit to “she’s the one.”

4. Check returns T&Cs and try on with caution

Wig returns usually only work if the label’s intact, the lace is uncut, and there’s zero perfume or makeup on it. Always check the shop’s returns policy before you buy, open the packaging carefully, and do your first try‑on makeup‑free and fragrance‑free. You can glam it up later, after you are sure she’s a keeper.

5. Wig grips are your new best friend

I’ve never left the house without one, and I never will. They keep your wig snug, stop it from sliding, and make all‑day wear way more comfortable. If you’re new to wigs, a grip will be the cheapest, smartest purchase you make.

6. Cheap doesn’t always mean bad

Some of my most affordable finds have been my most worn. Price and quality don’t always match up. Enjoy experimenting!

7. But cheap can mean too cheap

If it tangles when you look at it, or shines like a disco ball, it’s not a bargain. It’s a dust collector.

8. You need more storage than you think

Wigs multiply fast. A simple shelf, wig heads, or hanging storage will save you from a “pile o’ hair” situation.

9. Wigs change how you dress

Certain hair lengths and colours work better with different necklines, earrings, or even lipstick shades. Suddenly, you’re styling whole outfits around your hair.

10. Confidence is the best accessory

The real magic isn’t the hair, it’s how you feel in it. The right wig doesn’t just change your look. It changes how you move through the world.
